Therefore, in order to avoid a situation where the drivers drift off during the pilot mode and forget to monitor the speed of the train, the RÃ ©gie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP) has plans underway to monitor the speed of the train. This system is expected to check the train speed and stop it automatically should the speed exceed the limit. According to the head of the subway, Serge Lagrange, this measure is expected to improve performance and security at the subway. This paper outlines the problems that the company is bound to face, given th e endeavors towards automating the subway. In addition to this, there will be a look into some of the possible solutions. The paper also presents the best recommendations for tackling the issues outlined and some of the possible fallouts that could originate from implementing the recommendations. ProblemsEven though Serge Lagrange visualizes better performance following the automation of the subway line, the project is faced with numerous potential challenges. Downsizing of WorkersThe first possible challenge from automating the subway is that it will translate to the downsizing of 219 drivers. This alone spells major problems for the company, given the numerous efforts that have gone into cultivating a positive working relationship with the RATP Trade Unions. Lagrange foresees the social fallout that could emanate from the downsizing. Lagrange is tasked with the duty to convince trade unions that downsizing is in the best interest of the employees. Should he fail to convince them, one of the potential consequences will be a law-suit for the subway (Brockner et al., 2008). Another potential consequence is that the trade unions may act as an advocate against the subway in the future, withholding other employees from working in the subway (Ichniowski Shaw, 2003). In addition, the subway exposes itself to costly strikes courtesy of the trade unions if it should push through with the plans to downsize against the advice of the unions. Strained relations with the trade unions imply a poor future working relationship with the employees that will survive the downsizing (Brockner et al., 2008).Downsizing brings about new attitudes towards and within the company. For example, when the Relaince Mart underwent a downsizing in the year 2008, there were immediate changes in the attitudes of workers who survived this. One of the most commonly reported impacts of any major downsizing exercise is that it injures the reputation of the firm (Hogan, 2005). Specifically, the com pany image is undermined as potential clients and future employees lose faith in the ability of the firm to hold its own, seeing as downsizing is an indicator of the firm going through financial difficulty. In addition to this, downsizing means that the surviving employees feel insecure about their positions at the firm. In a sense, the psychological contracts are violated. What is more, it means that the company loses very productive employees in many cases (Buch, 2002). This could be a direct effect of the downsizing, or due to the instability brought about by laying off employees, which causes survivors to seek out more stable working environments (Hogan, 2005).Technical ChallengesAnother possible challenge from automating the subway is confined to the threat of challenges that come about due to automating the system. Lagranges decision to automate the subway, just like any other new system at the work place, will have to ace a few kinks, especially at the onset. For example, man y of the experienced drivers have limited experience with the automatic system as compared to the manual. This means that following the automation, or right before, Lagrange will have to implement a system whereby drivers take up training on how to use the automated subway system effectively (OReilly, 2007). This is bound to cost the company in terms of both time and money. Apart from training the drivers alone, other workers also have to familiarize themselves with the new system to facilitate synchrony in their various activities at the subway (Thomas Grey, 2005). For instance, there will be a need to ensure that the engineers working at the station are conversant with the new system. The other challenge in connection to the technical issues is due to the costs of changing the mode of operation at the work place. In the case study, it is estimated that the automation project should cost the company about six hundred million pounds. Some new equipment that has to be installed incl udes platforms that are protected by entry doors, equipping the rails with the necessary material, modernizing the stations, raising platforms, and acquiring new trains (Anteby, Corsi, Billaud, 2012). Both employees at the subway and clients will have to get used to the new systems implemented. What is more, the subway would have to change its operations in a way that may not be in synchrony with the ancient designs. For example, the study reports that some of the rails are very steep, and the tunnels too narrow (Anteby, Corsi, Billaud, 2012). All these have to be factored in while automating the line. Obviously, some adjustments would have to be made in order to incorporate the new system. An example of a mandatory change is in the slope of the rails. Effective working of the automated trains requires a relatively flat terrain. These pre-existing inconvenient attributes of the terrain, according to Anteby, Corsi and Billaud (2012), presented such challenges as interruption of tra ffic and finding a way to permit both the automatic and manual trains running on the same rails without any major issues. Convincing Concerned PartiesOne more issue is that of getting all the concerned parties on board with the plans for the company. These include the concerned investors, the workers, particularly the drivers, and the trade unions. Each of these parties has a stake in the decisions undertaken by Lagrange. For example, the investors might feel as though the automation is unnecessary at the time or unviable financially (Sutton, Eisenhardt, Jucker, 2004). The workers concerns are as addressed in the preceding paragraphs, whereby they stand to lose their jobs. Failure to convince the trade unions and workers to back his intentions would mean that they paralyze the operations of the subway. If Langrage does not convince investors, then he will fails to acquire the permission or financial empowerment to proceed with the project (Sutton, Eisenhardt, Jucker, 2004). This m eans that workers and clients are subjected to the same unsafe conditions of operation. Particularly, in this case, the human error continues to pose a major challenge to the safety of travel via subway. In addition, passengers and workers may continue to fall onto the rails given the conspicuous lack of structures, such as the use of entry doors, that should prevent them from falling.These mistakes, should they not be rectified, would also spell dire consequences for the subway company. For example, given the fact that the system continues to deteriorate by the day, it could mean an increased rate of accidents that involve trains that have not been automated properly. In addition, the company exposes itself to numerous law suits, following the risks that passengers and workers are exposed to, for instance, because there are no entry door to the rails (Anteby, Corsi, Billaud, 2012). The opportunities for something going wrong without the implementation of the project are endless. P ossible SolutionsAll the problems discussed spell negative consequences to the company, workers and the trade unions. As such, it is important to address the issues, if only negate some of the negative consequences of taking measures as drastic as laying off over thirty percent of all the workers. This section looks at some of the possible solutions to these problems. DownsizingDownsizing is unpleasant, since its effects can be felt to both those who are laid off and those who survive the lay-off within the company. One of the viable alternatives to downsizing the company is introducing pay cuts to all the workers (Lazear, 2012). The subway administration could consider adopting this strategy. One of the advantages of adopting this move as opposed to laying off workers is that should the subway acquire the resources enabling them to expand, they would not have hire new employees that have been out of touch with the evolution of the company. Another possible solution to downsizing is maximizing resources in the company (Brockner et al., 2008). The subway, if it has the means to do so, could consider moving labour around in order to fill any gaps within the company (Thomas Gray, 2005). For example, if there is a shortage of labour in one of the offices, a driver discovered to have the right qualifications could be directed to take up the job. In order to be diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa (307.1) according to the DSM-5 (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p.171) a person must display (a) restriction of energy intake relative to requirements leading to a significantly low body weight in the context of age, sex, development trajectory, and physical health. Significantly low weight is defined as a weight that is less than minimally normal or , for children and adolescents, less than that minimal expected, (b) intense fear of gaining weight or of becoming fat, or persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain, even though at a significantly low weight, (c) disturbance in the way in which ones body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or persistent lack of recognition of the seriousness of the current low body weight. There are two subtypes of AN one is Restricting Type (F50.01): During the last 3 months, the individual has not engaged in recurrent episodes of binge eating or purging behavior (i.e., self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas). This subtype describes presentations on which weight loss is accomplished primarily through dieting, fasting, and/or excessive exercise. The other subtype is Binge-eating/Purging Type (F50.2): During the 3 months, the individual has engaged in recurrent episodes of binge-eating or purging behavi or (i.e., self-induced vomiting, or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas). Historians and psychologists (Richard Morton, 1689) have found evidence of people displaying symptoms of anorexia for hundreds and thousands of years, and even though this disorder often starts during adolescence, more and more children and older adults are being diagnosed with anorexia. Parents and friends, social workers, and other health professionals are unable to tell if a person is struggling with anorexia by just looking at them. A person suffering from anorexia does not need to be emaciated or underweight to be struggling. Studies have found that larger bodied individuals can also have anorexia, even though they may be less likely to be diagnosed due to cultural prejudice against fat and obesity. Conceptual Framework Pertaining Anorexia Nervosa There are a few theories social workers use in order to help their clients with AN, but the theory I would use is the Bronfenbrenners Ecological Systems Theory, which divides the persons environment into five different levels: Microsystem, Mesosystem, Ecosystem, Macrosystem, and Chronosystem. The Microsystem is the closest to the person and the one in which they have direct contact (i.e., home, school, or/and work), includes interaction with family members at home, caregivers, and peers (classmates, friends, and/or co-workers) at school or at work, this is the most influential level of the ecological theory. The next level on the ecological theory is the Mesosystem; the interactions between the different microsystems which is the linkage of family, caregivers, peers group (i.e., childs parents actively involved in childs friendships or individuals friendship with peers out of the work environment). The third level on the ecological theory is Ecosystem; is the environment in which the individual is not involved, which is external to his or her experience, but nonetheless affects him or her anyway (i.e., parent stresses over work and comes home and takes it out on the child, or spouse stresses out at work and comes home and takes it out on his or her spouse). The other level on the ecological system theory is Macrosystem which is the culture in which the individual lives in instances with an individual suffering with AN how does the family and friends view AN, stigma and stereotype, as well as societys expectations of how people should look. The last level is Chronosystem; consists of all of the experiences that a person has had during their lifetime (i.e.; environmental events, major life transitions, and/or historical events). A person who suffers from Anorexia Nervosa, they do not have a single identifiable cause there are a various different factors that can play in the persons likelihood of having AN like psychological, social, biological, and external facto rs which as the social worker we should be able to identify them and make a change and help them cope in a better way by then using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which CBT aims to reinforce better eating behavior and encouraging more positive thinking about him or herself try to change the black and white thinking as well. Community Wellness in Anorexia Nervosa The National Eating Disorder Association (2018) states that at a given point in time between 0.3%-0.4% of young women and 0.1% of young men will suffer from anorexia. A study published by the Biological Psychiatry (2007) studied 9,282 English speaking americans and asked them about mental health conditions in which eating disorders was one of the options and they found out that 0.9% of women and 0.3% of men had anorexia during their life. In another study (Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 2010) that was followed for eight years using a group of 496 adolescent girls age 12 until they were 20, researchers found that 5.2% of the girls met the DSM-5 criteria for AN, and other eating disorders. In another study done by Eric Stice and Cara Bohan (Eating Disorders in Child and Adolescents Psychopathology, 2012) they found that between 0.9% and 2.0% of females and 0.1% and 0.3% develop AN, and subthreshold AN occurs in 1.1% to 3.0% of adolescent females. In an article Prevalence and Implicati ons of Eating Disordered Behavior in Men (2014), males have a higher risk of dying than women because they are diagnosed much later because of stigma and stereotyping that AN is a womens eating disorder, males do not develop eating disorders even though they make up 25% of individuals with AN. Research has proven that the prevalence of AN is amongst adolescent females but other research has shown me that stigma and stereotyping also plays a part in our society which has made AN a womens mental health ,therefore, men may be excluded from eating disorder, which is not the case; AN does not discriminate. Dialectic Nature of Social Work Practice in Anorexia Nervosa: Conflicts Dilemmas Anorexia happens in stages even though it is not felt by the individual, and every individuals experience is completely different than another individuals everperience. Therefore a social worker does not have one concrete method to help his of her client with AN. All individuals go through the Transtheoretical Model (stages of change): Precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and relapse. During the precontemplation stage, the individual is unable to acknowledge their problematic behavior and does not want to change. A person who is suffering from AN during this stage denies allegation from friend and family members that have noticed some of the warning signs and symptoms (i.e., exercising excessively, drastic weight change, binge-eating/purging, restricting eating, and worried about appearance). Therefore this individual is hostile; projects anger and frustration towards those trying to help him or her. During the contemplation stage, the individual is well aware that he or she has a problem and has started to think about getting help. In order for an individual to get to the contemplation stage he or she has to go through an event in there life that they are not willing to lose or go through (i.e., lose a friendship, become terminally ill, it can vary for every individual). They no longer want to use this disorder as a coping mechanism for dealing with stress or challenges in their life because they know it has become a concern. During the preparation stage they begin to connect with change talk for example, I do not want to die, therefore I am ready to change my eating habits and get some help. After preparation it is action, this stage is where the individual has made a change in their behavior, environment, and thoughts. They are committed to the change and also continue practicing their behaviors (i.e., sticking to their meal plan and/or their exercising plan). The maintenance stage the individual is focused on relapse prevention and building on positive changes by improving their health and happiness within themselves and happy with their physique. The individual builds new behaviors, new ways of thinking, healthy self care and coping skills with the help of social workers, support groups, and health professionals. Then, there is relapse, in this stage the social worker, health professions, support system, and individual find out their triggers what works and doesnt work for the individual suffering with AN because they return to their same old patterns, thoughts, and behaviors. A conflict can be the willingness of a person with AN, if the person does not wish to change, there will be no change, even if the child, adolescent is forced to go to a social worker by a parent or anyone concerned with their health also the health professions, social workers, support systems and individuals consistency in wanting to be better. Anorexia Nervosa: Psychiatric Allopathic Medicine Even though AN is a mental illness AN can impact the body, extreme AN can lead to medical problems (i.e., anemia, disturbance in heart rhythm, kidney problems, dental problems due to the vomit acid affecting teeth, and osteoporosis low bone density). These medical problems will need various of testing and to be monitored by medical practitioners with experience in AN. Medical professionals like paediatrician, dietician or nutritionist, dentist, and physiotherapists to help care and treat individuals with AN. Nutritional counseling helps the person identify their fears about food and physical results of not eating well as well as helping the individual get educated on how to eat right, how to track what they are eating and eat in a healthier way instead of not eating at all. South Africa Geography and History

South Africa is the southernmost country on the African continent. It has a long history of conflict and human rights issues, but it has always been one of the most economically prosperous nations in southern Africa due to its coastal location and the presence of gold, diamonds, and natural resources. South Africa was first inhabited by Europeans in 1488 when the Portuguese arrived at the Cape of Good Hope. However, permanent settlement didnt occur until 1652 when the Dutch East India Company established a small station for provisions on the Cape. In the following years, French, Dutch, and German settlers began to arrive in the region. By the late 1700s, European settlements were spread throughout the Cape and by the end of the 18th century, the British controlled the entire Cape of Good Hope region. In the early 1800s, in an effort to escape British rule, many native farmers called Boers migrated north, and in 1852 and 1854, the Boers created the independent Republics of the Transvaal and Orange Free State. After the discovery of diamonds and gold in the late 1800s, more European immigrants arrived in South Africa and this eventually led to the Anglo-Boer Wars, which the British won, causing the republics to become part of the British Empire. In May 1910, though, the two republics and Britain formed the Union of South Africa, a self-governing territory of the British Empire, and in 1912, the South African Native National Congress (eventually called the African National Congress or ANC) was founded with the goal of providing blacks in the region with more freedom. Despite the ANC in an election in 1948, the National Party won and began passing laws enforcing a policy of racial separation called apartheid. In the early 1960s, the ANC was banned and Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid leaders were convicted of treason and imprisoned. In 1961, South Africa became a republic after it withdrew from the British Commonwealth because of international protests against apartheid and in 1984 a constitution was put into effect. In February 1990, President F.W. de Klerk, unbanned the ANC after years of protest and two weeks later Mandela was released from prison. Four years later on May 10, 1994, Mandela was elected as South Africas first black president and during his time in office he was committed to reforming race-relations in the country and strengthening its economy and place in the world. This has remained the goal of subsequent governmental leaders. Government of South Africa Today, South Africa is a republic with two legislative bodies. Its executive branch is its Chief of State and Head of Government—both of which are filled by the president, who is elected for five-year terms by the National Assembly. The legislative branch is a bicameral Parliament composed of the National Council of the Provinces and the National Assembly. South Africas judicial branch is made up of its Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Appeals, High Courts, and Magistrate Courts. South Africas Economy South Africa has a growing market economy with a plethora of natural resources. Gold, platinum, and precious stones such as diamonds account for nearly half of South Africas exports. Auto assembly, textiles, iron, steel, chemicals, and commercial ship repair also play a role in the countrys economy. In addition, agriculture and agricultural exports are significant to South Africa. Geography of South Africa South Africa is divided into three major geographic regions. The first is the African Plateau in the countrys interior. It forms a portion of the Kalahari Basin and is semiarid and sparsely populated. It slopes gradually in the north and west but rises to 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) in the east. The second region is the Great Escarpment. Its terrain varies but its highest peaks are in the Drakensberg Mountains along the border with Lesotho. The third region consists of the narrow, fertile valleys along the coastal plains. The climate of South Africa is mostly semiarid, but its eastern coastal regions are subtropical with mainly sunny days and cool nights. South Africas west coast is arid because the cold ocean current Benguela removes moisture from the region, which formed the Namib Desert that extends into Namibia. In addition to its varied topography, South Africa is famous for its biodiversity. South Africa currently has eight wildlife reserves, the most famous of which is Kruger National Park along the border with Mozambique. This park is home to lions, leopards, giraffes, elephants, and hippopotamus. The Cape Floristic Region along South Africas west coast is also important as it is considered a world biodiversity hotspot which is home to endemic plants, mammals and amphibians. Conference Chair For The Asian American Student Union

Conference Chair – AASU As the conference chair for the Asian American Student Union, I spearheaded a school wide conference on Asian American issues and advocacy. This conference brought in speakers from across the United States, including members of the U.S. government, and had over 100 participants. In addition, I led a group of twenty students to the East Coast Asian American Student Union conference at Columbia University. I developed preparatory pre-departure workshops, handled scholarship distribution, and outlined travel logistics. As a member of the AASU board, I had the opportunity to develop my own general body meeting on the topic of Asian American portrayal in the media. My position as Conference Chair was my first large responsibility in college. This position developed my interpersonal and team working skills; it also instilled the importance of time management and organizational habits. Through the inspiration of my peers, I became committed to bring creativity and innovation to all events that I planned. Rewriting History Pearl Harbor and World War II Essay Tora, tora, tora!What if these words were never said? In the history of the United States of America, there have been many situations that have changed, or turned this countrys history around. One of these being World War II and Pearl Harbor. What if Pearl Harbor was never attacked by the Japanese, would we have thrown ourselves into the second World War? If not, would this have changed the political, economic, national, and governmental issues of the United States? The answer, more likely, is yes. On November 8, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president of the United States. During this same period, the Nazi party began their move to take over Europe. On March 15, 1939, the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia and Germans signed a pact with the Soviet Union, Britain and Poland singed a Mutual Assistance Treaty on August 25 as well. At the same time, the U.S took the backseat to the situation and proclaimed its neutrality. Ironically, the German troops crossed the Vistula River in Poland. On May 10, 1940, Winston Churchill became the British Prime Minister. Later that year the Germans bombed on the offensive against British factories and airfields. Later that week, Hitler set up a blockade of the British Isles, and the first major air raid on London on August 23rd. As all this unfolded, the U.S remained neutral. The U.S was still recovering from First World War. On November 5 Roosevelt is re-elected and the British are running out of supplies. So, Roosevelt issues the Lend-Lease Act: where Roosevelt lends or leases artillery and other war supplies to Britain and, any country whose defense was vital to the United States. Now, the big event that throws the U.S into World War II was the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Eight American battleships and thirteen other naval vessels were sunk or badly damaged, almost 200 American aircraft were destroyed and approximately 3,000 naval and military personnel died or were wounded . Due to this attack, the Japanese-Americans were hurt badly. On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 , which allowed military leaders to exclude whomever they felt necessary from military areas. This order served as the foundation for the removal of approximately 110,000 ethnic Japanese: two-thirds of them American citizen from the Pacific Coast. In the spring of 1942 the U.S. Army forcefully moved the Japanese American populations of California, western Oregon, western Washington, and southern Arizona to 16 temporary detention compounds; typically fairgrounds and racetracks, one by the salt river, in Casa Grand and another being in Florence, Arizona. Anywhere from 8,000 too 20,000 Japanese were in these relocation centers at one time; housed in small, badly built, military barracks. Not only did it hurt the Japanese-Americans in the U.S, later on it changed the Japanese way of life and the rest of the world like nothing else ever did. On August 6 1945, the U.S dropped the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Then again, on August 9, three days later, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. The blast destroyed 68 percent of the city and damaged another 24 percent, and an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 people were killed or reported missing in Hiroshima alone. Consequently, if Pearl Harbor was never attacked, the Japanese wouldnt have suffered such astronomical loss of life and humiliation due to their unconditional surrender. In reaction to the attack, the U.S threw ourselves into World War II. We mobilized 4,355,000 people into the war. Women Role In Society How American culture defines a female or (male) What is the woman's role in society? Men and women are by no means equal. There are always going to be certain attributes of each gender that the other gender cannot duplicate. This does mean that the one is better than the other. Even though we are seeing more and more women succeeding in life than men, American culture still defines a women as unequal. Society has set men and women apart by labeling them. It is common for men to be seen as strong and women to be seen as weak. The culture thinks that women cannot do jobs like men do; such as firefighters or policemen etc and if they do these jobs, the culture looks at these women in a negative side because these jobs are masculine and women are not supposed to do these jobs. Furthermore, culture defines a woman as a sensitive person; however in order to obtain these jobs, you have to be aggressive and tough and a woman is not like that. The female-male wage gap is a very objective representation of an accepted form of male dominance, whether it is fair or not. In business, men have always been in control. Now, women are fighting for equality in the workplace. However, American culture wants a woman to be a house wife, to just stay home and take care of children. Why should they? They have the right to make their own decisions. If a woman is interested in a job and meets the qualifications that employer requires, she should be considered eligible for that job. The point is that men have treated women as subordinates throughout history because that is what they have been taught by the culture: that women are not equal to men. When it comes to sexuality, the culture still does not defines women as equal. For instance, the same girl who is pressured into having sex on Saturday, might be called slut and whore on Monday morning, but the man who forced her into sex at the party will be called something like macho man or you are the man. Why is this different? This is ignorant. When men have more and more sex with girls it is like an achievement for them. His friends tell him you have achieved a lot in life, but if girls have sex with more and more guys; she is dirty and it is disgrace for her. In short, women should be defined the same as men. Women should be allowed to do whatever they desire in their heart, just like any men do. I see no reason other than ignorance that we should keep these rules in place. Social Issues

The Story of the First Lawn Mower Formal lawns made of short, well-maintained grass first appeared in France around the 1700s, and the idea soon spread to England and the rest of the world. But the methods of maintaining lawns were labor-intensive, inefficient or inconsistent: Lawns were first kept clean and tidy by having animals graze on the grass, or by the use of scythe, sickle, or shears to hand-cut the grass lawns. That changed in the mid-19th century with the invention of the lawnmower.   Machine for Mowing Lawns The first patent for a mechanical lawn mower described as a Machine for mowing lawns, etc. was granted on August 31, 1830, to engineer, Edwin Beard Budding (1795-1846) from Stroud, Gloucestershire, England.  Buddings design was based on a cutting tool used for the uniform trimming of carpet. It was a reel-type mower that had a series of blades arranged around a cylinder. John Ferrabee, owner of Phoenix Foundry at Thrupp Mill, Stroud, first produced the Budding lawn mowers, which were sold to the Zoological Gardens in London (see illustration). In 1842,  Scotsman Alexander Shanks invented  a 27-inch pony drawn reel lawn mower. The first United States patent for a reel lawn mower was granted to Amariah Hills on January 12, 1868. Early lawn mowers were often designed to be horse-drawn, with the horses often wearing oversized leather booties to prevent lawn damage. In 1870, Elwood McGuire of Richmond, Indiana designed a very popular human pushed lawn mower; while it wasnt the first to be human-pushed, his design was very lightweight and became a commercial success. Steam-powered lawn mowers appeared in the 1890s. In 1902, Ransomes produced the first commercially available mower powered by an internal combustion gasoline engine. In the United States, gasoline powered lawn mowers were first manufactured in 1919 by Colonel Edwin George.   On May 9, 1899, John Albert Burr patented an improved rotary blade lawn mower. While marginal improvements have been made in mower technology (including the all-important riding mower), some municipalities and companies are bringing back the old ways by using grazing goats as a low-cost, low-emission mower alternative.

Townsend (2011, p. 587) illustrates that the compatibilities which electronic and electrical equipment must comply with include designing equipment during the production process in a manner which facilitates reuse, repair, recycling and disassembly. This compatibility is guided by the WEEE’s principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The major goal of the directive is described by Vaisvila and Vaicikonis (2006, p. 43) as the minimization of the disposal of unsorted municipal refuse or waste and thus facilitate the achievement of a separated WEEE collection. Additionally the directive provides that the management systems within electrical and electronic industries must be designed and organized both in individual basis and collectively so that the directive is not violated by these industries. Hidy, et al. (2011, p. 990) add that apart for provision o f recycling and recovery targets, the WEE directives provides that export of electronic and electrical equipment can only be achieved through compliance with the WEEE directive. Furthermore the directive provides that manufacturers of this equipment must take responsibility for the costs associated with the picking of waste from the collection centers and also for the processes of refurbishing the equipment in readiness for reuse or recycling. Quinnell (2005, p. 71) explains that the large appliances which are used in households such as washing machines and refrigerators are covered by the WEEE directive. Small appliances such as hair dryers, vacuum cleaners and toasters are also provided for. Moreover, IT equipment such as computers and their accessories, calculators and mobile phones are covered by the WEEE directive. The disposal of stereos, radios and TVs are also covered under the consumer equipment category. Other equipment covered by the directive include toys and leisure equ ipment, lighting equipment, electronic and electrical goods such as saws and drills, medical and monitoring devices and appliances. Moreover the WEEE directive covers automatic dispensers such as coffee dispensers within its regulations as illustrated by Townsend (2011, p. 605). This means that the manufacture and dealing in these categories of equipment within the European Union must adhere to the WEE directives as it is provided within the European law. Enforcing the WEE Directive within the UK Yoshida and Yoshida (2010, 21) points out that the member states within the European Union are responsible for enforcing the WEEE directive. This means that the European Union member states are mandated to enforce the directive within their boundaries. Hidy, et al. (2011, p. 994) explain that the enforcement of the directive is achieved through the adoption of effective monitoring and inspection systems. These systems must be implemented by the member countries and thus applied in ensuring that manufactures and exporters of electrical and electronic appliances meet the requirement of the directive. Additionally, the member states of the union are responsible for imposition and execution of penalties on producers and retailers who fail to comply with the legal provisions of the WEEE directive. WEE Within the USA According to Hristev (2006, p. 62), within the US the enforcement o
